Cucumber
Cucumis sativus
Overview
Growing cucumbers in NFT systems is challenging due to their aggressive and extensive root systems which can clog standard channels. It requires wide channels (minimum 100mm/4 inches), high oxygenation, and rigorous root management. They are heavy feeders and drinkers, requiring trellis support for the heavy vines.

Nutrient Needs
Growth Timeline
Germination
3-5 daysSeeds require high humidity and temperatures around 26-29°C to sprout. Use rockwool cubes.
Seedling
2-3 weeksTransplant into the NFT system once roots emerge from the starter plug. Ensure the nutrient film touches the roots but does not submerge the stem.
Vegetative
2-3 weeksRapid vine growth occurs. Train plants up a trellis string immediately. Prune suckers to maintain a single leader stem if growing vertically.
Flowering & Fruiting
Ongoing (4+ weeks)Flowers appear at nodes. If parthenocarpic, fruit develops immediately. Switch to a bloom formulation nutrient mix.
Common Issues & Solutions
Root Clogging
- Nutrient solution overflowing channels
- Stunted growth due to lack of oxygen
- Aggressive root mass outgrowing the NFT channel size
- Use extra-wide NFT channels
- Trim roots carefully (risky)
- Switch to Dutch Bucket system if clogging persists
Pythium (Root Rot)
- Brown, slimy roots
- Musty smell
- Wilting leaves despite wet roots
- Reservoir temperature too high (>24°C)
- Low dissolved oxygen
- Use a water chiller
- Add air stones to reservoir
- Apply beneficial bacteria or hydrogen peroxide
Powdery Mildew
- White powdery spots on leaves
- Leaf yellowing
- High humidity
- Poor airflow
- Increase air circulation
- Lower humidity
- Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray
Harvesting Guide
When to Harvest
Harvest when fruits reach the desired size for the specific variety (usually 15-30cm) and are firm to the touch. Do not let them yellow or get too large.
How to Harvest
Cut the stem with sterile shears or a knife about 1cm above the fruit. Do not pull the fruit off, as this can damage the fragile vines.
Storage Tips
Store in the refrigerator crisper drawer wrapped in plastic to retain moisture. They last 1-2 weeks.
Expected Yield
High; a healthy plant can produce 15-20+ fruits over its lifecycle.
