Overview

Lettuce is exceptionally well-suited for Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) systems. Its shallow root system thrives in the thin film of nutrient solution, allowing for rapid uptake of water and oxygen. In an NFT setup, lettuce grows faster and cleaner than in soil, with a significantly reduced risk of soil-borne diseases.

Growth Timeline

1

Germination

2-7 days

Seeds are started in rockwool cubes or rapid rooters. High humidity and darkness are preferred until sprouting.

2

Seedling

10-14 days

Once true leaves appear, seedlings are introduced to weak nutrient solution. They are ready for the NFT channel when roots protrude from the starter plug.

3

Vegetative Growth

14-25 days

Rapid leaf expansion occurs in the NFT channel. Roots form a mat in the channel. Nutrient concentration is increased to full strength.

Common Issues & Solutions

Tip Burn

Symptoms:
  • Browning edges on young leaves
  • Necrotic spots on leaf margins
Causes:
  • Calcium deficiency
  • Inadequate airflow/transpiration
  • High humidity
Solutions:
  • Increase air circulation with fans
  • Lower humidity
  • Ensure adequate Calcium in solution

Bolting

Symptoms:
  • Elongated central stem
  • Bitter taste
  • Production of flowers
Causes:
  • Temperatures too high (above 24°C)
  • Day length too long
Solutions:
  • Maintain cooler reservoir temperatures
  • Harvest immediately if signs appear
  • Use bolt-resistant varieties

Pythium (Root Rot)

Symptoms:
  • Brown, slimy roots
  • Wilting leaves despite water availability
  • Musty smell
Causes:
  • Reservoir temperature too high
  • Low dissolved oxygen
Solutions:
  • Use a water chiller
  • Increase aeration in reservoir
  • Use beneficial bacteria supplements

Harvesting Guide

When to Harvest

Harvest when the head reaches the desired size, typically 30-45 days after germination, before bolting occurs.

How to Harvest

Remove the net pot from the channel and cut the roots off, or cut the base of the plant just above the substrate. For loose-leaf varieties, individual outer leaves can be harvested continuously.

Storage Tips

Wash leaves in cold water, dry thoroughly using a salad spinner, and store in a sealed container or bag with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture. Keeps for 1-2 weeks in the fridge.

Expected Yield

Approximately 150g to 300g per head, depending on the variety (e.g., Bibb vs. Romaine).
