Overview

In an NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system, broccoli microgreens are typically grown on a hydroponic medium (such as hemp, coco coir, or biostrate mats) placed within the channels. They are robust and forgiving, making them ideal for beginners. The constant flow of nutrient-rich water in the NFT system accelerates growth compared to soil, but care must be taken to ensure the medium remains moist without becoming waterlogged to prevent mold issues.

Growth Timeline

1

Germination (Blackout)

3-4 days

Seeds are sown densely on the medium and kept in total darkness with high humidity to encourage sprouting. In an NFT system, the pump is usually off or set to a very low intermittent flow during this phase to prevent washing seeds away.

2

Greening

1-2 days

Trays are exposed to light. The yellow sprouts turn green (photosynthesis begins). The NFT pump is turned on to a regular cycle to provide constant hydration.

3

Vegetative Growth

5-8 days

Rapid stem elongation and leaf expansion occurs. Roots grow through the medium into the nutrient film. Maintain good airflow to prevent mold.

Common Issues & Solutions

Damping Off / Mold

Symptoms:
  • White fuzzy growth on roots/stems
  • Mushy stems at the base
  • Patches of collapsing plants
Causes:
  • Excessive humidity
  • Poor airflow
  • Water level in NFT channel too high (soaking the stem)
Solutions:
  • Increase air circulation with fans
  • Reduce watering frequency or flow rate
  • Spray with dilute food-grade hydrogen peroxide

Leggy Stems

Symptoms:
  • Tall, weak stems
  • Plants falling over
Causes:
  • Insufficient light intensity
  • Lights positioned too far from the crop
Solutions:
  • Lower grow lights closer to the canopy
  • Increase light duration

Harvesting Guide

When to Harvest

Harvest when the cotyledons (seed leaves) are fully open and green, and the first true leaves are just beginning to emerge (usually days 10-14).

How to Harvest

Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the stems just above the grow medium. Avoid pulling, as this may bring up substrate or roots.

Storage Tips

Ensure greens are dry before storing. Place in an airtight container with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture and refrigerate immediately.

Expected Yield

High; approximately 200g to 300g per standard 1020 tray equivalent.
