Coriander

Coriandrum sativum

MediumHerb4-6 weeks

Overview

Coriander thrives in NFT systems due to the constant availability of water and oxygen, which supports its fine root system. However, it is sensitive to heat and prone to 'bolting' (premature flowering), making temperature control in the reservoir and ambient air crucial for success.

Growth Timeline

1

Germination

7-10 days

Seeds are often split (scarified) before planting to improve rates. Keep moisture high and temperature around 20°C.

2

Seedling

10-14 days

True leaves appear. Transplant into the NFT channel once roots are long enough to touch the nutrient film.

3

Vegetative Growth

14-21 days

Rapid leaf expansion occurs. Ensure adequate spacing in NFT channels as the canopy spreads.

Common Issues & Solutions

Bolting

Symptoms:
  • Elongated central stem
  • Production of flowers
  • Bitter taste in leaves
Causes:
  • High temperatures (above 24°C)
  • Root stress
  • Excessive light duration
Solutions:
  • Maintain cooler reservoir temperatures
  • Harvest frequently
  • Reduce light cycle to under 12 hours

Pythium (Root Rot)

Symptoms:
  • Brown, slimy roots
  • Wilting despite water availability
  • Musty smell from reservoir
Causes:
  • Warm nutrient solution
  • Low dissolved oxygen
  • Light leaks in NFT channels
Solutions:
  • Use a water chiller
  • Increase aeration
  • Ensure NFT channels are light-proof
  • Use beneficial bacteria

Tip Burn

Symptoms:
  • Browning on leaf edges
  • Dried out tips on new growth
Causes:
  • Calcium deficiency
  • High humidity preventing transpiration
  • EC too high
Solutions:
  • Add Cal-Mag supplement
  • Increase airflow over the canopy
  • Lower nutrient concentration

Harvesting Guide

When to Harvest

Start harvesting when plants are about 6 inches tall and vigorous, usually around week 4.

How to Harvest

Use the 'cut-and-come-again' method by trimming the outer, older leaves first, allowing the center to continue growing. Alternatively, harvest the whole plant before it bolts.

Storage Tips

Store stems in a glass of water in the refrigerator loosely covered with a plastic bag, or wrap in damp paper towels.

Expected Yield

Moderate; expect 2-3 significant cuttings per plant before bolting occurs.
