Parsley

Overview

Parsley is an excellent candidate for NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic systems. Although it has a notoriously slow germination rate, once the root system is established in the NFT channel, it grows vigorously and allows for continuous 'cut-and-come-again' harvesting for several months.

Growth Timeline

1

Germination

14-21 days

Seeds are slow to germinate. Soaking seeds in warm water for 24 hours prior to sowing in rockwool or starter plugs can speed up the process.

2

Seedling

2-3 weeks

Plants develop their first true leaves. Maintain high humidity and ensure roots are emerging from the starter plug before moving to the NFT system.

3

Vegetative Growth

4-5 weeks

Once in the NFT channel, roots expand rapidly into the film of nutrient solution, and foliage becomes dense. Nutrient strength can be gradually increased.

Common Issues & Solutions

Root Rot (Pythium)

Symptoms:
  • Brown, slimy roots
  • Wilting leaves
  • Stunted growth
Causes:
  • Reservoir temperature too high (>24°C)
  • Low dissolved oxygen levels
Solutions:
  • Use a water chiller
  • Increase aeration with air stones
  • Use beneficial bacteria or hydrogen peroxide treatment

Tip Burn

Symptoms:
  • Browning on the edges of young leaves
Causes:
  • Calcium deficiency
  • Inconsistent humidity
  • Poor airflow preventing transpiration
Solutions:
  • Add Cal-Mag supplement
  • Improve air circulation with fans
  • Check pH levels

Crown Rot

Symptoms:
  • Mushy stems at the base
  • Yellowing lower leaves
Causes:
  • Planting too deep
  • Excessive moisture around the stem base
Solutions:
  • Ensure the crown is above the substrate/water line
  • Improve ventilation around the base of the plant

Harvesting Guide

When to Harvest

Begin harvesting when the plant has at least 10-15 stems and the outer stems are about 6 inches long.

How to Harvest

Harvest the outer stems first by cutting them near the base of the plant. Always leave the inner, younger leaves (the crown) intact to ensure continued growth.

Storage Tips

Place cut stems in a glass of water in the refrigerator or wrap them in a damp paper towel and store in a plastic bag.

Expected Yield

High; a healthy plant in an NFT system can provide weekly harvests for 3-5 months.
