Mint

Mentha spp.

Overview

Mint thrives exceptionally well in NFT hydroponic systems due to the constant availability of water and oxygen. It is an aggressive grower that spreads via runners (stolons). In an NFT setup, growers must be vigilant about root management, as mint roots can quickly grow long and dense, potentially clogging the channels and causing overflows.

Growth Timeline

1

Propagation

7-14 days

Best grown from cuttings to ensure flavor consistency. Place cuttings in rockwool or rapid rooters until roots emerge.

2

Vegetative Growth

2-3 weeks

Transplant into the NFT system. The plant will grow rapidly, producing lush green foliage and expanding its root system quickly.

Harvesting Phase

Continuous

Once established, mint can be harvested repeatedly. Regular pruning prevents flowering (bolting) and encourages bushier growth.

Common Issues & Solutions

Root Clogging

Symptoms:
  • Water overflowing from NFT channels
  • Slow drainage
  • Roots growing into adjacent net pots
Causes:
  • Aggressive root growth typical of mint
  • Small channel dimensions
Solutions:
  • Trim roots regularly
  • dedicate a separate system or end-channel for mint
  • monitor flow rates daily

Powdery Mildew

Symptoms:
  • White flour-like dusting on leaves
  • Stunted growth
Causes:
  • High humidity
  • Poor air circulation
  • Crowded plants
Solutions:
  • Increase airflow with fans
  • lower humidity
  • apply neem oil or sulfur-based fungicides

Pythium (Root Rot)

Symptoms:
  • Brown, slimy roots
  • Musty smell
  • Wilting leaves despite ample water
Causes:
  • Water temperature too high (>24°C)
  • Low dissolved oxygen
  • Light leaks in the reservoir
Solutions:
  • Use a water chiller
  • add air stones to reservoir
  • use beneficial bacteria or hydrogen peroxide flush

Harvesting Guide

When to Harvest

Harvest can begin when plants are 6-8 inches tall and have established a robust root system.

How to Harvest

Snip stems just above a leaf node (where leaves join the stem) to encourage the plant to branch out and become bushier. Harvest frequently to prevent flowering.

Storage Tips

Place cut stems in a glass of water like a bouquet for short-term use, or wrap in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Expected Yield

Very High; mint regenerates quickly allowing for weekly harvesting.
